Elks Ladies Auxiliary adopts military platoon

In early November, 15 large care packages were sent from the Lake Oconee Post Office to a military platoon “adopted” by the Lake Oconee Ladies Auxiliary to the Elks.  A special part of the packages which included snack foods, personal care items and recreational equipment, were cards and letters prepared by the students from Greensboro Elementary School and Lake Oconee Academy.  The platoon of 63 soldiers, deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, was so appreciative of the effort to make their lives more comfortable, that they sent Certificates of Appreciation to all those involved.

On April 19, Joyce Huston and Kathleen Sakal, co-chair women of the Adopt a Platoon Project visited the Greensboro Elementary PTA Meeting to recognize the teachers who make an extra effort in involve their students.  Pictured here are Joyce Huston, President and Kathy Sakal, Corresponding Secretary of the Auxiliary, Carolyn Cunningham, Grade 1, Wanda O’Callaghan, Grade 3, and Priscilla Jones, Grade 5, Language Arts.  Ms. Jones included pictures of each one of her five classes along with their correspondence.  In addition to framed certificates, the school received a CD with copies of the 126 pictures sent by the Platoon from Afghanistan. While featuring nothing sensitive in nature, the pictures cover the time period from the Platoon’s departure from Germany through their service in Afghanistan.  They will serve to give the students a look into the countryside and people for whom American Soldiers are fighting.
