Greene Co. Habitat renovated home
Greene County Habitat for Humanity, Inc. provided affordable housing for its 73rd partner family in Greene County on Sept. 12, 2021, to the Cunningham family in Greensboro. The home was renovated with funds from the sales of donated furniture, household items, and construction materials at the Greene County Habitat ReStore.
In September, the ReStore celebrated 20 years of service to the lake country community.
Sharmeka Cunningham, Habitat’s newest homeowner, contributed more than 300 hours of “sweat equity” to the renovation of her home and the construction and renovation of other homes in the program. She also participated in homeownership classes and community service events to raise awareness of the Habitat homeownership model. Partner families who complete the program are sold a home with a no-interest mortgage. Liz Baum, a mentor in the Habitat partner family program said of her, “Sharmeka and her family are a shining example of hard work and determination. She is so proud to have a home to call her own.” At the dedication, Cunningham was overcome with joy at the presentation of the keys to her home.
Greene County Habitat for Humanity has constructed and sold homes in Greene County for more than twenty years. Funds for construction are generated by the Lake Oconee Showcase of Homes, through retail sales at the Habitat ReStore, and with generous donations from our community churches, business, individuals, and service organizations.
