Falcons coach has storied history with Pats

HOUSTON — Dan Quinn was on the field when Malcolm Butler intercepted the pass at the end of the Super Bowl two years ago in Arizona.

The Atlanta Falcons head coach was asked about the ending of the Patriots incredible, 28-24, win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The Butler interception didn’t bother him as much as the last Patriots touchdown drive, finished off with a 3-yard reception by Julian Edelman to put the Patriots ahead with 2:02 remaining in the game.

“That’s what still sticks with me, the way the Patriots drove the ball down the field to get the lead,” said Quinn. “That’s what I think about, honestly, not that last play.”

It appears coach Quinn has some “one-on-one” experience with another Patriots employee, offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia.

Quinn was defensive line coach for four years in the AFC East with the New York Jets (2005-06), Miami Dolphins (2007-08), going head to head with the Patriots twice a year. Hence, he knows Mr. Scarnecchia very well.

“When a group doesn’t beat themselves and doesn’t allow mistakes to happen for a second or third time,” said Quinn. “That’s a real sign that this is an adjustment we’re going to make. And for years he nailed it.”

Quinn says he owes a lot to his former boss in Seattle, Pete Carroll, for his early successes with the Falcons. In fact, he admits to emulating some Seahawks practices.

“We’re not a version (of the Seahawks). We’re not Seattle East. But we’re our own Atlanta,” said Quinn. “There are definitely things I learned from coach (Carroll). He had probably the single biggest influence on me in my coaching career.

“(Carroll) gave me a great vision of what a head coach can be, but he also said, ‘Hey Dan, do it your own way,'” said Quinn. “I took that advice.”
