Foster failure becomes ORHS Critter Mayor of Lake Oconee Village

Winston “Winnie” Tvrdy is one lucky dog. The now 5-year-old pup was just a year old when he met his foster mom, Tracy Tvrdy, through an animal rescue group in Atlanta. It didn’t take Tracy and her husband David long to realize they couldn’t let their little “doodle mutt” go, so he became a permanent part of the family. In the rescue world, we affectionately call this a “foster failure.”

Winnie was joined a couple years later by sister Chrissie, who came from another rescue group in Atlanta. The family loves to go on long walks on the golf course, visits to grandma and grandpa’s house at Reynolds Landing, and Winnie can’t resist good game of fetch.

Feeling so grateful that he found his forever family through the hard work of an animal rescue, Winnie wanted to pay it forward by running for Critter Mayor of Lake Oconee Village. He knows how much time and effort goes into rescuing and rehoming cats and dogs in need, it just takes a hardworking (and lovable) dog like himself to help spread the word about what we do at the Oconee Regional Humane Society.

Through his campaign efforts, Winnie alone raised over $1,000 — this money, along with the campaign contributions from the other mayoral candidates, will go a long way toward helping ORHS with our low-cost spay and neuter program, the community pet food drive for dogs and cats in our area, and other life saving procedures for animals in need.

Winnie also wants to remind people how much ORHS relies on our volunteers to keep our doors open and to get cats and dogs off the streets and into loving homes. He wants everyone to know that volunteering is so much fun and rewarding, and ORHS has lots of opportunities to help out, from answering phones, writing articles for our website and local newspapers, taking photos of our adorable animals, event planning, and of course, playing with and caring for puppies and kittens. Please come to the ORHS adoption center at 1020 Park Avenue in Greensboro to fill out an application. How can you resist this face?
