Wilbur and Orville Wright risked life and limb in their pursuit of human flight. But their sister Katharine was the behind-the-scenes mastermind of their inventions. She sourced materials, managed communications, and kept Wilbur and Orville focused on their goal—even when it seemed hopeless—all at the expense of her own unique dreams and plans. But the Wright Brothers’ success wasn’t the end of her sacrifice. At the height of Wilbur and Orville’s fame, tragedy ripped them apart time and again, forcing Katharine to make choices that would haunt her for the rest of her life.

A significant figure in the early 20th-century women’s movement, she served as the third female trustee of Oberlin College. She also made three flights with Wilbur, becoming one of the first women to go up in an airplane.
